5 Social Media Mistakes That Are Killing Your Engagement

You are posting every day, tracking hashtags, and jumping on the latest trending audio, yet your follower count is static and your engagement rate is hovering near zero. It's frustrating, time-consuming, and unfortunately, very common.

Many brands treat social media as a broadcast channel, when it was designed to be a conversation. Here are the five most common social media mistakes we see brands make, and how to fix them:

1. Treating Your Grid Like an Ad Catalog

If every single post is a product highlight, discount offer, or "buy now" call to action, people will unfollow you. Social media users are there to be entertained, educated, or inspired. Aim for an 80/20 mix: 80% value (tips, humor, insights) and 20% promotion.

2. Ignoring the Comments section

The algorithm rewards active conversation. When someone takes the time to comment on your post, and you ignore it (or reply with a single generic emoji), you signal to both the user and the algorithm that you don't care. Reply to comments with questions, start discussions, and show there are real humans behind the logo.

3. Lack of Visual Consistency

A messy feed looks unprofessional. If your graphics use ten different fonts and a mismatch of colors, it damages your brand credibility. Invest in a simple, cohesive brand kit with 2-3 fonts and a clean color palette, and stick to it across all posts.
